At Katsura Imperial Villa, said to be the most beautiful garden in Japan, there is a garden path known as arare-koboshi — "scattered hail." We carved its pattern of small, densely laid stones into a slab of Aji granite, a stone Japan holds in the highest regard. The memory of a garden Japan is proud of, transferred into the home. This is the story of a piece conceived as a stand for AMUAMI's work.

Set a single cherry blossom petal on it, and the spring of Katsura appears. Place a maple leaf there, and you will feel autumn. Beauty is born the moment something meets this stone.

Western beauty rests on an order that is absolute and man-made. The Parthenon remains the Parthenon, whatever happens around it. Japanese beauty rises out of the relationship between one thing and another. Kinkaku-ji shows an entirely different face on a day of snow than it does on a day of spring haze.
