Haiku, the tea room, bonsai, capsule hotels, kei cars, instant ramen, even Pokémon. One unique feature of Japanese culture is a habit of shrinking large things down and drawing them within reach. Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto holds a National Treasure of quiet grandeur: the Stage of Kiyomizu. Following the wooden joinery technique that raised its massive pillars without a single nail, AMUAMI reimagined the Kiyomizu stage as a piece of furniture — and, in doing so, paid tribute to the nameless carpenters who achieved something extraordinary.
